Marketing Plant Targets will be out tomorrow after some time to digest StatsCan Seeding Intentions. Expecting some extra Canola intended acres and reductions in Durum and Lentils but not reduction enough alas. With US crop burning up and our own Prairie Crop starting to disappoint, this report could be shrugged off as soon as next weather model runs.
Insect Awareness Page updated with Canola insect counts actually dropping as a percentage of Economic Threshold, with Diamond Backs not materializing into a problem at all so far and Seedpod Weevil levels backing off. Lentil Counts updated with almost no Lygus Bug or Aphids present so far. Pea sweep counts are also low to date and will be updated next week.
Stripe Rust running wild in un-sprayed Checks of Winter Wheat and at much lower levels (but still present) in fields which received a Flag Leaf application but are now at the 20+ days after treatment mark. Follow up application is being considered even though the crop is flowering. As Durum heading into Flag, we will be checking diligently and likely will have an “Awareness” page dedicated to it in the next few weeks.
Canola Fungicide options rolled out in wake of last year where we had similar conditions going into July (big crop, wet forecast) but saw July Fry kick in with 5 weeks of dry weather that ended the disease threat. So we understand that many are hesitant to worry about Sclerotinia this year, but with 60+% of our rotation hosting the disease, Canola on pace to see $14.50 and 3 full years of conducive weather, the threat remains real and there are stewardship issues to consider as Canola becomes a bigger part of our rotation.
